Welcome to 4th Grade

Mrs. Hummel

Welcome to fourth grade!
Our first few weeks of school have been used to help establish and practice routines.  Please continue to sign your student's planner and look over their completed assignments.  Remember that tests dates are noted on the monthly calendar in the front of the planner.

Social Studies

In social studies we will be beginning
a discussion of the northeast region of
the US.  Since this region is home for
Plymouth Rock and the first settlements
of our country, we will be visiting these
historic sites via the internet.

A virtual tour of the mayflower
will prove to be interesting.

Math

In fourth grade math vocabulary is
an important part of our class discussion
and lessons.  Students are writing expressions, evaluating them and using
variables to solve problems.
We are also working on writing responses
to ope ended questions.  We are continuing to practice math facts especially
multiplication facts.
Instant recall of these facts will be necessary
for successful computation of larger numbers.

LA

In LA we have been discussing nouns- singular and plural, common and proper, and possessive forms.  Students are expected to use the information they learn
in English class in all their writing.

I n reading we are focusing on
non-fiction stories.  We are working in skills that are needed for our other
content area subjects.
Please encourage your student to read daily.

 The diocese suggests that fourth
graders should be reading 25 books a year.

Religion

In religion fourth graders will be
discussing the ten commandments.

Each week
we also discuss
the Bible readings
from Sunday's liturgy.

We use the Venture paper
to begin this discussion.

Science

In science we are continuing our investigation into the weather unit.
We will be concentrating on severe weather conditions noting causes
and safety precautions.
