Have an active and healthy summer break!

Grade and/or Subject:

Pre-K-6 Physical Education & Grades 4-5 Health

Objective:

The overall goal of our Elementary Physical Education Program is to help our children develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will eventually lead them to a lifetime of physical activity.

Rules and Procedures:

Class procedures in 1 st through 5 th grade are simple and consistent. Students stand in an assigned squad position during our prayer and stretching. Afterward, we continue our warm-up with basketball practice, jump roping, jogging, dancing or any activity that helps energize our students.

We then begin our lesson or activity portion and finish with a cool down period and a drink.

Pre-K and Kindergarten classes are less structured and the activities and games are simple and fun. Enjoying movement and activities is very important at this age. My hope is that all students look forward to gym class and feel good about participating in our many activities. This is a challenge to be taken seriously. Please contact me if there are any concerns your or your child may have.

While in the gym students are expected to follow a few basic rules. All students are expected to be respectful, use equipment as instructed, play fair and try their best.

Notes for Parents:

Gym uniforms are navy LC gym shirt and shorts. LC sports logos are not accepted as the regulation uniform. Plain navy nylon or sweat suits or LC sweat suits are to be worn over the shorts during certain times of the school year. Please refer to the handbook. Real sneakers must be worn, no clog type or platform sneakers. If a student does not have his uniform on gym day, he will not participate in class.

Looking Ahead:

This year, we will once again be participating in JUMP FOR HEART during Catholic Schools Week.

Third, fourth and fifth grade students will be taking the Presidents Physical Fitness Challenge in the second half of the school year. As in the last twenty years, our 4th and 5th graders will be involved in swimming lessons at the YMCA. this program will be scheduled in April.

And of course we will be looking forward to a fun day in the sun at South Hills Park, the annual Blue and White Day in May 2009.
