LEBANON CATHOLIC

MIDDLE SCHOOL HANDBOOK

PHILOSOPHY

Middle School students are unique in many ways.  They do not need the structure of the Elementary grades,

but they are not ready for the independence of High School.  They need guidance in spiritual development, academic,

study, and organizational skills.  They also need opportunities for social development that are appropriate for their age.

In order to meet the needs of Lebanon Catholic School’s 6th, 7th and 8th grade students, the Administration

and the Middle School Team will implement the policies and strategies outlined in this Middle School Handbook.

PRACTICING YOUR FAITH

Lebanon Catholic is a special place because of the tremendous heritage we have as a faith community.

At Lebanon Catholic, students will attend religious studies classes, prayer services, Eucharistic Adoration, retreats,

and have the opportunities for prayer and reflection.  Students will have the opportunity to help plan these events.

Students may also serve in other ways.  Altar servers, lectors and Sacristans all come from our student body.

Feel encouraged to volunteer even if you have never done these things in your home parish.

If you wish to speak with someone about your faith, there are any number of persons with whom you should

feel comfortable.  Two special persons are Deacon Richard Wentzel and the priest who is assigned to Lebanon Catholic

as our Chaplain.

Students who are not Catholic are required to participate in the spiritual life of Lebanon Catholic through attendance

at school wide and class religious assemblies and through the completion of our religious studies curriculum.

REPORTING FOR SCHOOL AND HOMEROOM

Students may report to their lockers at 7:45 AM.  Students who arrive earlier are to wait in their designated area.

Students must be in their assigned Homeroom by 8:00 AM.  A WARNING BELL will ring at 7:55 AM.

Once students have reported to Homeroom they are not to leave unless given permission by the teacher.

Students are to report to Homeroom with the books and materials they will need for their morning classes.

Reporting for school (cont.)                                                                                          2

During Homeroom students will participate in both the morning prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

Students are also to remain quietly seated during announcements.

LOCKERS

Each student will be assigned a locker on the first day of school.  The locker has a top and a bottom section.

Students are expected to keep it neat and well-organized so that needed items may be found quickly.  Lockers will

be checked monthly by the homeroom teacher for cleanliness and order.

Lockers are to be visited only at these times:  before homeroom, before and after lunch and at dismissal, unless

teacher permission has been given.  Detention will be issued to all violators.

CHANGING OF CLASSES

Students have three minutes to move from one class to another.  This is more than enough time if no one

wastes time.  Lateness for class will result in a detention.  If a student needs to talk to a teacher and knows he/she will be

late for the next class the student must ask that teacher for a late slip.

Hallways are off-limit during class time.  If a student is in the hallway during class time, the student must have a

Hall Pass from the teacher.  Detention can result if the student does not have a hall pass.

ORGANIZATION

Middle School students are required to purchase the following items at Lebanon Catholic the first week of school.

Mandatory hardback copybooks for the Middle School level, one per subject and  a Lebanon Catholic assignment book.

·        Trapper Keepers and binders are optional.

·        Loose-leaf paper 100 count

·        Pens (black or dark blue ink), #2 pencils, etc..

·        Math – (grades 6,7,8) – a T1 30  calculator  or one that is similar

·        Individual teachers may have other requirements to be given the first week of school

Organization (cont.)                                                                                                      3

Periodically, teachers will check class materials to insure that they are complete and being maintained in

a well-organized manner.

ASSIGNMENT BOOKS

One of the most important survival tools is the Lebanon Catholic assignment book.  The assignment book

must be purchased in homeroom the first week of school.  Every 6th, 7th and 8th grade student at Lebanon Catholic

is required to maintain the assignment book by recording homework assignments, upcoming tests and projects, and

other important information daily.

HOMEWORK

Homework can be assigned for review, reinforcement, or a variety of other purposes.  It is an important part

of the overall educational process at Lebanon Catholic.  If the assignment book and notes are used properly, homework

will be completed efficiently.  Homework is needed to insure that ideas and concepts discussed or taught in class are

understood fully.

A positive attitude is vital.  Students should plan to set aside a block of time for homework each day.

Study for tests over several days instead of  cramming” the night before the test is to be given.

Each teacher wants every student to succeed, and each teacher will do all he/she can to help.  If a student is

having academic problems the student should ask for help.  Waiting until the day of a test is too late.

HOMEWORK HELP

Homework help is mandatory for any student who is failing any subject at Mid- quarter based on deficiencies

and also for any student who fails for the quarter.  Students are required to attend Homework Help until the following

quarter’s deficiencies go out.  Failure to attend Homework Help will warrant detention.

EXAMS

Middle school students will take a Mid-term and final exam in each subject at the end of each semester.

This is worth 10% of the student’s semester grade.

ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL CRITERIA

Textbooks must be appropriately covered at all times.  Each student is responsible for the condition of the book

which he/she is assigned, and the book must be returned in good condition at the end of the year.  A charge for lost or

damaged books will be assessed at the end of the year.  Textbooks will be checked monthly.

7th, 8th Grade SCIENCE FAIR

7TH and 8th grade students are required by the Diocese to participate in our Science Fair.

6th graders can not participate.  Dates will be announced once the school year begins.  First Place winners will go to the

Capital Area Science Engineering Fair.

Students are permitted to work in small groups—however this will presume that ALL members of the group

participate equally.  Project selection will occur through Science classes.  While deciding on projects, students should

recall that their project should reflect an appropriate level of effort and thought.

Science Fair (cont.)                                                                                                      5

Please note that this is a student project.  It is not a parent project.  Parents do not expect their children to do

their jobs, so do not ask  your parents to do your job.

LUNCH

Middle School students will pass through lunch lines in an orderly manner.

Students may choose where they wish to sit, but they must remain there until the lunch period ends.

Please remember that other people are in the cafeteria after you.  It is your responsibility to return your trays,

dispose of garbage, and generally clean your table.

In order to maintain good order and a nice atmosphere, please follow these rules:

DETENTION

The High School Student Handbook contains information on student regulations, behavior, and detention.

Information in the Handbook applies to all students at Lebanon Catholic.  The policies explained below apply only

to Middle School Students.

If a Middle School student receives a detention, a yellow carbon copy of the detention form will be sent home

with the student.  This carbon copy must be signed by his/her parent.  The student must give the signed carbon to the

teacher who gave the detention the next day.  If the signed carbon is not returned the following day the parent will be

contacted by telephone.

DETENTION REDEMPTION

Middle School students have the option of earning a “way out” of detention through the use of a

Detention Redemption form.

When a teacher gives a student detention, that student may request a Detention Redemption before leaving that class.

The teacher may refuse this request if the cause of the detention was serious or if the student has repeatedly engaged in

disruptive or inappropriate behavior.

If the teacher agrees to give the student a Detention Redemption form, it is the responsibility of the student to show

it to each teacher he/she meets prior to every class or in school activity beginning with the next class period and ending the

following day with the class in which the detention was received.  This includes the lunch period monitor and the

homeroom teacher.  If each teacher signs the form, affirming that the student has demonstrated appropriate behavior,
the student has earned a “redemption” from that detention.

If a student leaves school early or misses a class or classes because of illness or other special circumstances,

the entire process must be restarted the following day.

BEHAVIOR POLICY

Classroom discipline and the assigning of detentions for inappropriate behavior are not always sufficient

to modify behavior.  The following policy will help insure an optimum learning  environment for all students.  This plan

includes documentation, recommendations, and steps that may be taken with disruptive students.

Behavior Policy (cont.)                                                                                     7

Targeted Behaviors

1.      Talking without permission

2.      Movement or noises causing distraction to teacher and/or other students

3.      Touching other student’s property and/or hitting, pushing, knocking books off desks

4.      Defiant attitude (disobedience and/or disrespect)

5.    Bullying and harassment will not be tolerated at Lebanon Catholic

Suggested Disciplinary Steps

1.      Individual Teacher Discipline – Warnings, detention.

2.      Out of class Time Out – The disruptive student will be removed from his/her present room.  The student

(under the supervision of the teacher) will call his/her parent to inform them of his/her behavior.  The student

will remain in the office until the next period begins.

3.The student will receive detention without redemption.

DISAGREEMENTS

From time to time, there may be an occasion when a student has a disagreement with a teacher.  This situation

should be handled in the following manner:

1.      Discuss the situation with the teacher directly.  Do this privately and outside of the class time.

Nothing  is accomplished by complaining to  other students or teachers.

2.      Discuss the problem with your parents.  If they wish to be involved, again begin with the teacher.

Parents may telephone the school to set up a meeting or to speak directly with the teacher.

3.      If these steps do not resolve the matter, contact Mrs. Simmers.(academic) or Mr.Miller (discipline)

4.      If these steps do not resolve the matter, contact Mr. David Chauvette, Principal.

Most disagreements can be resolved before Step 3 is reached.  Remember that most problems are simply the
result of misunderstanding.  You need to work together with your teachers so that you can accomplish great things
while you are a student at Lebanon Catholic School
